Directions For Knowing All Dark Things

NOTES

Directions For Knowing All Dark Things is a revisit to one of my favourite instrument combinations. I wrote my first septet some 12 years before this one and loved the versatility of writing for those instruments. While revisiting my first septet, I started to hear new ideas for the same instruments and DFKADT was born. DFKADT is the shadowy counterpart to Alexandra Variations. I often like to work on two and sometimes three pieces at the same. These pieces sometimes share musical material, sometimes not. While DFKADT and Alexandra Variations were both written at the same time, they do not share any obvious similarities. While writing I tried to direct my shadier, darker emotions toward DFKADT and my brighter more uplifting emotions toward Alexandra Variations.  However, neither piece remains stuck in one mood; instead, both pieces explore many different approaches to working through the emotions I was feeling at that time.
