AUGUST 2024 / SOLO CELLO
Elegy for Tony Barton
NOTES
Tony Barton was a close friend of mine who passed away in 2024. We shared the stage many times together and exchanged musical inspiration often. When I heard of his passing, I knew I wanted to do something to remember him. The music we played together some 10 years ago was nothing like the music I am writing now. He was a guitar shredder and we would often trade solos in the style of Marty Friedman, Dimebag Darrell, and Eddy Van Halen. At first I thought maybe I could write something similar like this for cello but the more I worked with the music, the more I felt that this wasn’t really the mood I wanted to convey, nor was it the state of mind that I was in. So the result isn’t so much music that Tony would have played, or even listened to but rather a reflection on the death of a friend and all that comes with that.
