Everything In The World Is Either Inside Or Outside

The concept for this piece and several others that I wrote around the same time come from a new way of working with musical materials in my head. Previously, I worked by writing down musical ideas that came into my head and then I manipulated these to create my music. I was more or less totally in control of what sounds I wanted my musicians to make. Everything in the World is Either Inside or Outside is different. I visualised the entirety of the piece in my mind before writing anything on paper. Then when it came time to actually write something on paper, my sketches were almost exclusively words and descriptions of how the music worked, very few ‘little black dots’ were written at this stage.

I began writing this piece while waiting for the birth of my daughter. The sometimes overwhelming feelings of anxiety, anticipation, excitement, and apprehension permeate the piece. This can be relatable on different levels and from different perspectives, not just that of the father to be. When there is a big event we are preparing for for a long time or a date on the calendar that we look at as the end goal for something these feelings are there as well. While the aforementioned emotions are present throughout much of the piece, the ending brings a feeling of resolution, calm, peace, and joy.
