NOTES
This piece was conceived of as ‘parlour music,’ or music for the home. Originally, I had the hope that we could perform this piece in numerous houses around Singapore in the more relaxed setting of a living room or parlour, but social gathering being limited to only a few visitors per day allowed prevented our performing like this. The first performance was presented in a concert hall setting, where a speaker recited poetry written by Sarah McNeal. When I gave these movements to Sarah, I asked her to interpret them freely and write some accompanying text for each movement. Through collaboration, we reordered the movements to fit the narrative and mood of each piece.
