NOTES

Originally, muzak was considered music that was composed to be ignored. In short, background music. Music in elevators, supermarkets, the waiting room. We can’t forget the importance this music has played throughout history. No Salzberg Court soiree would have been complete without a string quartet playing something. But did it really matter what? The advent of apps like Spotify, Google Play Music, and Apple Music that run on algorithms remove the last vestige of human choice and effectively pipe in the muzak of our time.

Muzak rarely makes its appearance in a live performance setting but when it does it gives us an opportunity to finally listen to all this music we have been hearing. These Muzaks are my contribution to this wonderful and ubiquitous genre.

This set of 5 pieces is written in a graded fashion. In other words, the fourth part is the easiest and the first part is the most challenging. These five pieces are great ensemble practise for cello sections. They can be effectively performed with some or all parts doubled by multiple players.
