Owl Brook Lament

NOTES

Writing these programme notes nearly 20 years after composing the piece I can still remember what I was doing and feeling at the time of its composition. My father was driving our family mini-van to New Hampshire. I was seated in the passenger seat writing this piece, thinking about a lost love. Owl Brook was the name of a house that I used to go to as a child deep in the woods of rural New Hampshire. The house had no electricity so we had to use a wood-burning stove for warmth and cooking. I have fond memories of going to that house from a very young age up until I was in my mid 20’s. After a few initial performancesI forgot about Owl Brook Lament until recently. Upon rediscovering it I decided to dedicate it to my friend Colin Hardersen who always loved this piece. I often looked to Colin for critique on my pieces and he always held this piece in the highest regard.
