NOTES

This piano trio consists of four short movements, each exploring different textures, grooves, and characters. The inspiration for a lot of this music came from experimenting with having two simultaneous feels happening at the same time.  I have always been interested in poly-rhythmic music, and poly-tonal music, but this is something a bit different. I think of it as poly-feel music. For example, having one person play shuffled semiquavers while another player plays swung quavers, or one player plays strict, straight, quavers while other musicians play rubato rhythms around them. After playing around with these possibilities in improvisatory groups, I noticed some of these influences began to rub off on my composed music. This trio doesn’t ask the players to play in these juxtaposed feels, (I feel that by notating these instructions it kind of takes away the magic of what is actually achieved through improvisation) but rather there are passages where these kinds of contrasting feels poke their nose out.
