23 OCTOBER 2020 / ORCHESTRA

The Wind-up Bird Chronicle

NOTES

I began writing this piece during the circuit breaker period in the month of June, 2020. The writing of this piece started as an escape from the mundanities and monotonous patterns of quarantine. There are a few connections to Haruki Murakami’s book of the same title, but this piece of music is meant to be an independent piece functioning entirely separately from the book. While some tone poems attempt to follow the plot of the story in which they are following, this piece does not do as such. Think of this as more of a musical impression of the book as a whole. More like an abstract, when, if viewed from one angle reveals a direct connection to a character or scene in the book, but from another angle this component disappears and something new emerges.
