Three Scenes for Cello Duo

NOTES

These three short pieces depict three scenes. In the first scene the two cellos sound as one and mimic the sound of a guitar being strummed. From this rhythmic strumming emerges a simple melody that passes between the two instruments. The second scene in the set is titled ‘From a Hopeful Breath.’ Quite a few pieces composed at this time are about hope and optimism for the future. This piece contains proud rising lines and a driving rhythm that propels the music forward. The final bars mark the piece with a dark foreboding that comes when one questions hope and doubts themself. ‘Jean Short Jamboree,’ is this final piece in the set and depicts a scene of a special kind of party. At a jean short jamboree, attendees all wear jean shorts, as the night progresses everyone cuts off a portion of each pant leg, rendering the shorts shorter and shorter. The music has a fun bass line with a jazzy melody on top that recalls the improvisatory excursions of 1950’s cool jazz.
