MAY, 2024 / STRING QUARTET

Tidepools

for Ocean Harmony Pearl

NOTES

I wrote Tidepools before and after the birth of my daughter Ocean. It is filled with gradual shifting harmonies, and an introspective section of melodic heterophony. Heterophony is a texture that results from several different instruments playing the same melody at the same time, each in their own way. It is like the skeleton of the melody is followed by everyone but the way in which one follows this skeleton varies from player to player. Other pieces that I wrote during this time in my life follow different feelings that came up while anticipating Ocean's arrival. This piece focuses more on consonant feelings of repose. At times it shimmers, at other times it burbles.
